Q: Why is Conavine so expensive? A: Konabian is cultivated only in Hawaii. Due to space constraints, Hawaii can only produce a certain amount of coffee per year. In order for this to be a sustainable source of income for growers, the prices of their products need to be high so that they can continue to grow their grains. Many coffee brands mix Kona beans with beans from other countries to retain the right to claim that their products are Kona. Only 10% of Kona beans are needed in the blend to be legally sold as Kona products. If you look at the products that say 100% Kona, you’re usually getting more expensive, but you’re getting a product that’s grown exclusively in Hawaii.
Q: Why is Kona coffee classified this way?
A: Hawaii is home to highly fertile volcanic soils. It is also in the best location for the desired climate and is ideal for growing coffee beans. The combination of soil, climate and different elevations plays an important role in the production of high quality coffee beans. Beans grown on one part of the island may differ in taste and strength from beans grown elsewhere on the island, especially due to these factors.
